Fergie calls on winter break as players face tough US tour

Fergie wants winter break
By Chris,

After England's woeful showing at the World Cup, Sir Alex Ferguson has demanded that the Premier League adopts a winter break. The issue has long been debated by those at all levels of the game with Fergie a long-term supporter of the controversial idea – yet he has called for the 'break' with his players currently undergoing a gruelling pre-season tour in the United States!
With England's top stars some of the highest paid in the world, the idea of giving them time off to recuperate around Christmas is sure to be met with hostility by many hard-working supporters.

However, Sir Alex remains a huge supporter of the idea and – though his United side in training across the Atlantic – has taken an opportunity to outline his support for a Winter break to the press.

Many newspapers and commentators have noted some major irony. Fergie is demanding that his players are given time to rest at the mid-way stage of the season; yet has flown them to the USA during the summer for a series of high-profile friendlies and, no doubt, strings of promotional appearances.

Gruelling pre-season tours have, in recent years, been blamed for disappointments over the course of the season. United's summer schedules have too often been based on promotion and income generation rather than good and proper preparation for the new campaign – but that hasn’t stopped Sir Alex's latest call for the Winter Break.

England's terrible World Cup campaign has heightened calls for the season to adopt a winter-time siesta, and Fergie has said: "The FA has to give the country the best possible chance of doing well in the World Cup".

"Because of the nature of our game and because of the demands from television to have a programme every week, I have been talking about a winter break but nothing has happened," he added.

"They must realise that, going into the World Cup, they have handicapped their team."

Following a 1-0 win over the Philadelphia Union, the Red Devils look ahead to matches against the Kansas City Wizards, the MLS All Stars and Guadalajara in North America.
