Forlan linked with sensational United return

Come back!

Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has sparked rumours that Atletico Madrid star Diego Forlan could make a sensational return to Old Trafford. Meulensteen has said the player would be welcome back to the Theatre of Dreams despite a disappointing first spell with the club.

Forlan's charismatic and flamboyant approach proved popular with many United fans during the striker's spell with the club.

He bagged 17 goals for the Red Devils from 98 appearances, though 61 of those were from the bench.

The Uruguayan, who joined United in a £6.9million move from Independiente, took an incredible 27 matches before bagging his first United goal as he scored from the penalty spot against Maccabi Haifa.

However, he went onto score a number of fantastic goals to help shed his "Diego Birtles" tag - most memorably, of course, the two goal cameo at Anfield which will forever go down in United folklore.

After Forlan's excellent free-kick helped Uruguay into the World Cup semi-finals on Friday, coach Meulensteen told Voetbal International: "Diego was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

"He has developed fantastically, so complete - a top athlete. I really would welcome him back to Manchester United."

Speculation suggests that the coach has exchanged texts with Forlan about a potential return to Old Trafford, with Diego allegedly saying "I'm ready for it!".

Would I welcome him back?Yes.Mobile.Quick.Scores goals in La Liga, the best league in the world.I think his preformances in the World Cup have been excellent/great movement.Ok not great at United but pretty damn good since he left. The other thing about this geezer is his great attitude.Go back to when he left.It didn't work out,but he went with dignnity. No moaning, groaning, whining, blaming everybody else. Age could be a problem. Must be 30 now.Could he do a job for a couple seasons? Better than Berba>? Should we be going for bigger names & spending zillions???Then again, we ain't got zillions have we?
It's probably all a wind-up, but it got me going. What do others think?

Just read this report as well and was going to comment on it.
First thoughts were the guy struggled here and perhaps we got him before his prime, but at 31 he's nearing the end of his prime and that, together with perhaps the stigma of underperforming last tine, might result in the same goal drought as before. Given that he's been performing really well (and the risks above) he could be well overpriced? It's not a goer for me.

Problem is he plays the same position as Rooney. He was a good player, never gave up when he was with us, just needed another season to bed in. However he was and still is a far better player than that over priced flop Berbatov.
