By Chris, June 19 2010 In an era where the country's top football stars get paid more in three days than the average fan gets in a year, United frontman Wayne Rooney continues to command respect. However, he let England's supporters down on Friday evening in disappointing fashion as he slammed fans who jeered the team following a woeful goalless draw with Algeria.
A clearly frustrated Rooney screamed - "Nice to see your home fans booing you. That's loyal supporters" - at television cameras as he trudged off the field following England's inept display against brave, unfancied Algeria.
Perhaps Rooney needs a reality check. Many of the supporters who have travelled to South Africa get paid less in a year than the bulk of the England squad get in a matter of days.
Despite that, they have spent thousands of pounds to watch the England team take on the likes of Algeria. The performance they witnessed on Friday evening was unacceptable and fans had every right to jeer the team as they walked off the field.
After months of hype, England's highly-paid stars were again poor. The 1-1 draw with the United States, from an England perspective, was disappointing - but the goalless draw with Algeria was worse with the African nation even threatening to bag a winner in the closing stages.
Despite his high wages, Rooney commands respect for his effort and endeavour. However, his rant on Friday evening showed he is frightfully "out of touch" and was another sad indictment of the modern game.
England must now look ahead to Wednesday's game with Slovenia with question marks still raised over whether or not they will qualify for the tournament's knock-out stages.
Does Wayne resemble a somewhat under pressure young man carrying a nations hopes on the shoulders of someone not yet matured into accepting and carrying out that responsibility?
One must wonder. His performances to date in WC 2010 have been sadly lacking any resemblance to the Wayne of the red jersey we all know and love.....
He puts that pressure on himself though, which is half the problem. You can't blame the fans if Rooney goes to the papers and says, we'll win these next two games, smash the germans in the next round, I'll show the world how good we are etc etc. What does he expect the fans to think when he does this?
Who would have thought a boy who was kept well grounded at Everton and idolised players, the same way that those england fans idolise him, could show his nose up to them so quickly. Its very sad and another example of how there is no affinity between the players and the fans anymore. Its what has really put me off football quite frankly and why I don't take it so seriously anymore. This is not all Rooney's fault or any other players fault, don't get me wrong, the fa, premierleague and skysports bandwagon have helped create this culture where players are untouchable.

england are playing poorly granted but the fans and press are idiots for ridiculing them, fair enuf give out about your team as much as ya like but never never boo your team, take the good with the bad, thats why they wont win the world cup because of the fans and the press and because.. heskey too (obviously), world cups and tournaments are all about scoring goals and teams that win them score goals - heskey doesnt and when he plays he becomes the focal point of the team and slows everything down and they dont score, darren bent, defoe score goals and dont slow play down ergo should of brought bent (also bent =24 goals, heskey =3) (ahem also who injured rio, fell on his leg????? yup your right heskey, ok could happen to anyone but when ya play a bad hand ya generally dont get lucky) or at least play rooney the way hes been playing all season ( with a 5 man midfield behind him) and scoring for fun up front with a gerrard or j cole behind him!! thats my two cents.... oh and by the way im irish (ya I know were pretty dire too) but like the english team but think its a bloody disgrace the way some "english fans" treat their teams (clubs and National).

Couple interesting posts. However, imo any comments(good or bad) that a player makes is down to the player. Never mind blaming the fa, Prem League, Sky Sports, the Man in the Moon et al.Poor excuse.Any player, including Rooney, should take responsibility for what they say & have the b***s to accept it.On reflection he realises that he got it wrong, but there we go he said it.An apology has been issued but it has a hollow ring about it.I actually think that it is pretty revealing.Gives an insight into the mindset of these guys(not just Rooney) the whole pack of 'em.They're in another world! All paid for by us of course.I know that I am risking a serious shellacking here, but Rooney's record in the BIG games ain't that great.Yes,I know he tortured AC Milan but I am talking the BIG games.Where was he in two Champions League finals?2006 World Cup....managed to get himsself sent off & in the games before that what did he do?2010 WC...a no show against the USA. The Algeria game?Couldn't trap a bag of cement. We live in a dream wold in this country.Lampard, Gerrard, Ashley Cole (the f*****g t**t) are 'world class.' Yeah, right!!!And the other classic, 'Rooney is the best player in the world.'Sorry folks but that is laughable.I would think that any England & Utd fan would like to think that is the case, because we want/need a real homegrown who we can call the best.People get desperate & wind up convicing themselves of things that just ain't true.Let's have it right.Wayne Rooney is a young man with a terrific talent, but great,no. Best was great. So was Charlton.Pele,Maradonna,Platini,Zidane.He might yet become great but he ain't there yet.Sorry to say this but the best do the biz in the games that really matter....that is why they are the best.Ronney hasn't done that.Plenty of yap.Dumb tv commercials & magazines articles. All generating loadsa money. Now that is a department where he really is world class. But for the bit that really matters....nah.
I actually think Rooney was spot on. It's just typical of England's classless, fickle fans.
Never boo your own, your there to support them not get on their backs. What kind of affect is booing going to have on the players? I highly doubt it will be a good affect.
For sure these fans have paid there hard earned money to travel out to South Africa, but so what, no one forced them too and they knew before they travelled that in football there are no guarantees.
Had I been in that stadium I would have jeered them off too. You don't become a superfan by refusing to express your feelings or displeasure if you have come to expect a certain type of performance. If my performance in work slumped to that of Rooney et al's, I would expect a b0ll0ck1ng. The b0ll0ck1ng also helps motivate me to do better and more than likely improves my performance...
If your angry say so. Don't keep it inside. Rooney's anger is targeted in completely the wrong direction. Its his performances that need attention by himself, not the conduct of the fans.

I must be missing something. This lot (England players) already live in a protective multi million pound(s) bubble. If the logic of the last two posts is followed no criticism is allowed.Travel all the way to South Africa.Spend....whatever...to do it, watch a load of s**t served up but don't anyone dare criticise. Why?Reality check required. The real supporters(& many of them are there right now) will never get to to meet Rooney, Cole, Terry & co & tell them what they tnink.Nobody goes to the game intending to disrerespect the team. But people aren't dumb.If what they are watching is poor they are entitled to vent their frustrations. What's the alternative?Politely applaud & pretend nothing is wrong?Look, they were rubbish & none more so than Rooney. From this young man, time for less yap & a whole lot more (productive) action.Get on with it.
If the coach will ever let Rooney get into the game we will see a different result. Ijustdon't understand why he has been benched.
Eh? When has he been benched? Rooney's performance against Algeria was the worst I have ever seen from him. Not being able to pass or control a ball has nothing whatsoever to do with the coach, the tactics or the formation.
I suppose there are two questions here, and the answers for me, are completely contrasting.
Is it ever right for a fan to boo your own team? and Is it right for a player to criticise his own fans?
Frankly, a paying customer has the right to make themselves heard when they don't feel they're getting value for money. However baring in mind it's us fans who pay their wages, it's never acceptable for a player to return the insult.
Personally i don't think I've ever booed any of my sports teams, and hopefully nevr will, but they had a right to vent their frustrations, and Rooney did not.
