Manchester United lifted the League Cup for the fourth time with a 2-1 win at Wembley on Sunday. The Red Devils bounced back from a goal down to edge out Aston Villa thanks to a Michael Owen strike and a fine header from substitute Wayne Rooney.

The Red Devils retained the Carling-sponsored League Cup on Sunday with a fine victory over Martin O'Neill's Villa at Wembley.

United got off to the worst possible start as James Milner broke the deadlock from the penalty spot.

Nemanja Vidic was hauled down by Gabriel Agbonlahor - and Villa's supporters were baying for the Serbian to be dismissed.

Referee Phil Dowd did not even show Vidic a yellow card for the challenge - but Villa's supporters were on their feet again moments later in delight as Milner coolly drilled the ball passed Tomasz Kuszczak from twelve yards.

United, however, bounced back and restored parity just seven minutes later. Dimitar Berbatov capitalised on a defensive slip by Richard Dunne as he found Michael Owen who side footed a calm finish home.

The Red Army, decked out in green and gold, were jubilant and United went onto to look the more dangerous side for the remainder of the contest.

Ji-Sung Park went close for the Red Devils as he hit the post but the country's most prolific marksman was soon on hand to make the difference.

The winning goal came with sixteen minutes to go - ensuring that a United fixture at the redeveloped Wembley Stadium did not go to extra-time for the first time!

Antonio Valencia's superb cross found substitute Rooney and the England frontman was on hand to continue his devastating form with an excellent header that left Brad Friedel helpless.

Rooney, who had replaced injured goalscorer Owen, is beginning to prove a true aerial threat and has now scored 28 goals in all competitions this season.

This was another fantastic day for United's supporters as Sir Alex Ferguson bags yet another medal to put in his tremendous and ever-growing collection.

Stand-in skipper Patrice Evra led the long walk up the Wembley steps and United's fans will be hoping this wins sparks the catalyst for further success domestically and on the continent this season.

The Reds have now won the League Cup on four occasions and have become the first team to win the trophy in back-to-back seasons since Nottingham Forest lifted the Rumbelows Cup in 1990.

Full Time - Aston Villa 1-2 Manchester United
Attendance - 88,596
