Wayne Rooney's 40th-minute header sent Manchester United on their way to an emphatic five goal win over Portsmouth on Saturday, as anti-Glazer protests continued from large numbers of the club's support. A minute's silence to mark the 52nd anniversary of the Munich Air Tragedy was impeccably observed before kick-off.

Sir Alex Ferguson heaped more misery on Avram Grant as his Manchester United side cruised to a 5-0 victory over troubled Portsmouth at Old Trafford.

Three own goals - from Anthony Vanden Borre, Richard Hughes, Marc Wilson - just about sums up Pompey's plight as Grant's men continue to looked doomed for a return to the Football League Championship.

Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov were also on the scoresheet as United sealed an emphatic win against the bottom-of-the-table southerners.

Pompey, backed by only a few hundred travelling fans, started competitively and almost took a shock lead when Wesley Brown was forced to scramble an effort off the line.

The result takes United back to the top of the table ahead of Sunday's fixtures, with a tricky midweek Premier League trip to Aston Villa next up for the Champions.
