Leeds stun Reds
9,000 travelling Yorkshiremen made all the noise at Old Trafford as Leeds claimed a stunning and well deserved Cup triumph.
Sir Alex Ferguson did make changes to his side - but with Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov starting up front, and with the likes of Gary Neville, Wes Brown and Tomasz Kuszczak all involved - the bookmakers widely tipped the Premier League champions to make light work of their rivals.
However, the travelling Whites showed the fight, endeavour and determination required to seal a historic win - with Jermaine Beckford's cool strike enough to secure safe passage into the competition's fourth round.
The goal came on 19 minutes. Johnny Howson's excellent through ball found Beckford, the prolific frontman showing a clean pair of heels to the hapless Brown before rounding the 'keeper and calmly flicking the ball home. The away end erupted and Leeds, beaten only twice all season, went onto bag the result of the round.
United must be ashamed by their display. The Reds were far too complacent and didn't show the Whites enough respect. Gabriel Obertan was poor, Brown had a calamitous afternoon at the back and the four-man midfield was sloppy; never stamping its authority on proceedings. The Reds can have no complaints whatsoever.
United did have chances - but finishing proved wayward at best. Rooney missed a clutch of fine opportunities, and substitute Michael Owen miscued with the goal gaping. Ryan Giggs and Antonio Valencia were also thrown on from the bench but United couldn't break down Leeds, and the visitors had some fine second-half chances of their own. Substitute Robert Snodgrass fired a powerful free-kick against Kuszczak's crossbar after Beckford had whistled an effort inches wide with only the ‘keeper to beat.
You won't often see Reds showing any kindness to Dirty Leeds - but the Whites did the F.A Cup proud this weekend and deserved the win. This wasn't a "smash and grab" job. United must improve if they want to get a result at Eastlands during the week - but Fergie's hopes of winning the greatest Cup of them all this season are already over.
Leeds will now travel to Spurs in the F.A Cup fourth round. Their fans will be loving these returns to former regular top-flight haunts.
