Giggs wins SPOTY 2009 award

Winner !

Ryan Giggs was left overwhelmed after picking up the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year award on Sunday evening. The Welshman beat off competition from the likes of F1 World Champion Jenson Button and WBA Heavyweight Champion David Haye to scoop the gong.

Giggs won the BBC Wales award last week, but looked genuinely stunned to scoop the nationwide prize on Sunday evening.

The evergreen United winger pipped F1 champ Buttonand heptathlon gold winner Jessica Ennis to win the award.

Giggs also beat the likes of WBA Heavyweight champion Haye, Ashes winning England skipper Andrew Strauss and Britain's tennis hope Andy Murray in a public vote.

Parallels can instantly be drawn with Giggs’ success in last year’s PFA Player of the Year contest. Over the last twelve months, there were probably shortlisted contenders who’d done a little more than Giggs – but the Welshman’s success is a tribute to his remarkable career.

Giggs, the country’s most decorated professional footballer, remains one of the most consistent performers in Manchester United’s star-studded squad.

The evening was largely a disappointment. Sue Barker’s terrible jacket and a host of errors were soon forgotten however when Giggs made a heartfelt acceptance speech. A United legend.
