Reds linked with shock swoop for free agent Campbell
Now MUFC?
By Chris, December 9 2009 United have been linked with a shock move for Sol Campbell to help ease their defensive crisis. The veteran is available on a free transfer after walking out on Notts County earlier in the season.
The extent of United's defensive crisis was clear on Tuesday evening with Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher and Ji-Sung Park forced to play at the back against Wolfsburg.
The press claim that Sir Alex Ferguson is set to launch a shock swoop for free agent Campbell to help ease those problems and give his depleted squad another option at centre-back.
United currently have as many as 9 defenders on the sidelines.
Capped by England on 73 occasions, the 35-year-old sensationally walked out on Notts County after one game. Having signed a five-year deal with the Magpies, Campbell was apparently unhappy with the fourth flight after making his debut in a 2-1 defeat at Morecambe.
The speculation seems unlikely at best.
Campbell is not available to join a new club until January. By that time, many of United's walking wounded will be back in action. The player will also be lacking in match fitness - though he has been training in Arsenal in recent weeks, and is eager to find a new club as soon as possible.
After his actions at Meadow Lane, would you want Campbell at United? Join in the debate on the messageboard.
