De Laet signs

Contrary to initial reports on Manchester United’s official web-site, defender Ritchie De Laet has joined the club on a permanent basis rather than on-loan. The exact nature of the deal is thought to be complex – with any fee paid for the Belgian youngster dependent on his performances in the red jersey.

De Laet has reportedly penned a three-year deal at Old Trafford but is expected to only play for the reserves in his first season with the club.

Confusion has surrounded the nature of this surprise transfer - with the fee United pay for the player dependent on his level of performance with the club.

The 20-year-old's arrival came as a shock to United fans. Sir Alex Ferguson had already said that United would conduct no further business in the window, whilst the fact that the player had a failed trial at Bournemouth last summer may suggest he isn't the calibre of player Fergie would be looking at.

However, it is believed that the player was signed on the advice of Warren Joyce, assistant manager of the reserves. He managed De Laet during his time at the helm of Royal Antwerp and is thought to be a keen admirer of the player's abilities.

Welcome to Old Trafford.
