Dutch Legend
VDS
announced his international retirement after Euro 2008 - but the Dutch were
left desperate as a goalkeeping crisis hit their World Cup qualifying campaign
last week.
The
United star agreed to postpone his farewell and played the full ninety minutes
in matches against Iceland
and Norway.
VDS kept
two clean sheets as the Dutch secured respect 2-0 and 1-0 wins to stay on track
for a place in South Africa
in 2010. The former Fulham star has confirmed he'll be making no further
appearances for Bert van Marwijk's side.
"I'm
happy with this farewell. I knew this would be the last time, so I wanted to
finish on a better note than when we lost to Russia at Euro 2008. That has been
achieved."
Two wins
and two clean sheets have certainly provided a fitting farewell for Van Der
Sar.
Meanwhile, reports claim that the ‘keeper is considering extending his stay at Old Trafford. His contract ends at the end of the current campaign - but increasingly speculation states that he fancies another year or two with the club.
