Tabloids claim AIG sponsorship deal is in doubt

New sponsor?
By Chris, October 5 2008
Speculation has intensified that Manchester United may be on the brink of losing shirt sponsors 'AIG'. The US insurance giants have effectively been nationalised after being rescued by a £43billion loan from the American government - meaning United, technically, are sponsored by the George Bush's administration! The company remains in severe difficulty.

United signed a four-year deal with the American International Group little over two years ago. The deal was worth a whopping £56.5million - with half of this money still owed to the club.

Reports from numerous tabloid sources claim that AIG may pull out of the lucrative deal as they look to cut costs. This would mean the 'AIG' logo being removed from United's shirts and merchandise and the club would, almost certainly, start the search for a new primary sponsor immediately.

In the current economic climate, United would not relish finding a new deal as lucrative as the one penned with AIG in 2006.

If the deal was terminated, fans who have already bought this season's jersey would feel aggrieved.  The credit crunch has hit a handful of shirt sponsors across the country - with West Brom unable to attract investment; and their shirts look much classier for it!
