United face Smoggies in League Cup

Manchester United will face Middlesbrough in the third round of the League Cup. Gareth Southgate’s men have enjoyed an impressive start to the new campaign and will travel to Old Trafford on the week commencing September 22nd. Boro reached this stage of the competition with a 5-1 thrashing of Yeovil Town.

United can expect a tough test against Boro - especially if Fergie opts to change his team around and give fringe and youth players a chance.

Boro sit sixth in the table following wins against Spurs and Stoke, whilst they were unlucky at Anfield not to claim a result. A typical Liverpool late-show denied by the Smoggies.

The dreadful ‘Automatic Cup Scheme' should ensure a big crowd - although fans were given the option of opting out of home matches in the Carling-sponsored competition.
