Capello, when hired as England boss, left the door open for Scholes and Jamie Carragher to end their international retirement and don the Three Lions once more.

However, Scholes is not tempted to add to his 66 caps and will focus on keeping his place in Sir Alex Ferguson's European Cup-winning side.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Scholes said: "A couple of years ago I did think about coming out of international retirement. When Steve McClaren was appointed he rang me and asked me to return.

"But in the end I came to the conclusion that I had made the right decision in the first place and I don't want to go back."

Asked if the answer would be the same for Fabio Capello, Scholesy said: Yes. It wasn't about thinking it was too much or I wasn't capable - it was just that when I was playing I was not enjoying it one little bit."

Scholes' final international appearance was in the Euro 2004 quarter-final against Portugal. He played the first 57 minutes of the 2-2 draw before being replaced by Phil Neville. England, of course, lost on penalties.
