Sir Alex Ferguson made plenty of changes and a total of eight substitutes as he tested his squad's depth against the League One side.
Tomasz Kuszczak, Wesley Brown, Rio Ferdinand, Darren Fletcher, John O'Shea, Nani, Carlos Tevez and Fraizer Campbell all started the game - but the changes started at half-time with a host of youngsters earning the chance to impress. Peterborough too made a host of changes and the game, though competitive, had a strong pre-season feeling to it.
The game saw the De Silva twins make their first appearances for the club. Fabio, a left-back, came on at half-time whilst right-back Rafael played the full 90 minutes. The youngsters agreed to join United over eighteen months ago but could only sign professional contracts when they turned 18 in July.
The deadlock was broken six minutes before half-time with Posh full-back Russell Martin chesting a David Gray cross into his own-net.
United sealed the win on 68 minutes as Gibson thrashed home a superb, 30-yard volley as the 20-year-old continues to stake a claim for a shot at regular first-team football.
The scoreline was a little hard on a spirited Posh side who forced Kuszczack and substitute 'keeper Ron Robert Zieler into a host of excellent saves. United held on for the clean sheet - and a positive result in Wednesday's friendly with Juventus will complete an unbeaten pre-season schedule.
