Four-star United brush aside Kaizer Chiefs

United win four-nil
By Chris, July 26 2008
After a busy week, the Kaizer Chiefs ran out of steam as United eased to a 4-0 victory to lift the 2008 Vodacom Challenge trophy. The Red Devils produced their best performance of the South African tour to secure their first piece of silverware of the new season. Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney scored either side of half-time, with youngsters Tom Cleverley and Fraizer Campbell sealing the win.

Ahead of that pointless, money-fuelled game in Nigeria, Sir Alex Ferguson mixed up his starting line-up. Danny Simpson, Craig Cathcart, John O'Shea, Darren Fletcher, Rodrigo Possebon and Lee Martin were amongst the names handed a start.

United got off to a lively start as Wayne Rooney went close with a handful of decent chances. Ryan Giggs then went close at both ends - with the Welshman missing at one end before slicing inches wide when attempting to clear a Chiefs corner at the other.

The Kaizers were impressive when they held United to a 1-1 draw earlier in the week - and they looked capable of going one better this time as Nemanja Vidic scrambled a Promise Mthembu effort off the line. The player was tripped by Tomasz Kuszczak as he sent his effort goalward but the referee decided against awarding the spot-kick.

The wind was taken out of the Chiefs' sails, however, when United broke the deadlock five minutes before half-time. Ryan Giggs showed how determined he is to extend his appearance record this season with a fine right-footed finish as he latched onto a deep cross from Martin.

The advantage was doubled just before the hour-mark as Rooney fired home a fine strike. The England forward latched onto neat through-ball from youngster Danny Simpson before producing a cool finish. The Chiefs, so impressive in their previous two games, looked deflated and the tourists went onto dominate.

Youngster Cleverley, flown out to join the first-team squad this week, put the game beyond doubt as he put home a Rooney pass before Campbell continued his mission for a regular first-team spot with the fourth and final goal on 87 minutes.
