Eagles finds the net as Chiefs hold Reds

One all draw
By Chris, July 20 2008
Manchester United's tour of Africa got underway with a 1-1 draw against the Kaizer Chiefs in the opening match of the 2008 Vodacom Challenge series. 22-year-old Chris Eagles took advantage of a rare first-team appearance with the equaliser for the Red Devils. Jonathan Quartey, later awarded the man of the match award, had put the home side ahead from the penalty-spot.

Gary Neville, continuing a brave return from injury, brought down Siphiwe Tshabalala to give the Chiefs a chance to from the spot. Quartey duly obliged with an excellent effort from twelve yards.

United had missed a handful of opportunities - including efforts from Wayne Rooney and Nemanja Vidic - but the Chiefs had made a positive start to the game and their opener, eight minutes before half-time, was not ill deserved.

The Red Devils, who were missing Rio Ferdinand through a back spasm, improved after the interval and really took the game to their hosts. With superior fitness starting to show through, Eagles grabbed the equaliser on the hour mark as he powered home an impressive effort.

The Chiefs seemed content with the draw and, despite the introduction of four substitutes from the bench; the European Champions couldn't break down the Soweto club's determined backline.
