Ex-Red set for Ipswich Town trial

Tractor Boy?
By Chris, July 17 2008
Former Manchester United winger Quinton Fortune could be set to join Ipswich Town on a trial basis. The South African international, who spent some seven years with United, has had a difficult time since leaving Old Trafford in 2006 – but could be set to resurrect his flagging career in the Championship with the Suffolk club.

Fortune arrived at Old Trafford after the Treble-winning success of 1999 as cover for Ryan Giggs.

Sir Alex Ferguson splashed out £1,500,000 to Athletic Madrid for the versatile midfielder - and the player proved a very useful squad player during a seven-year spell at Old Trafford.

Fortune, who is now 31, made 76 league appearances for United and also regularly featured in the European Cup. However, he was eventually deemed surplus to requirements and was released in July 2006.

Since then, the player has had a difficult time in his search for a new club. He spent a short, and largely unsuccessful, season with Bolton after leaving United and has seen his career hampered by a series of injuries.

However, promotion-chasing Ipswich Town could be set to offer the player a route back into English football as manager Jim Magilton confirms the club are in discussions with the player about a potential trial move.

He said: "Quinton Fortune is a lad with great quality who has had a tough few years. An agent has called me and asked me about taking him.

"If he was someone who was anywhere near his true fitness, then he is someone we would invite in."

Good luck to Fortune!
