United to join race for Russian star Arshavin?

Speculation is rife that Manchester United have joined the race to sign Europe's hottest property. Russian winger Andrei Arshavin has set the continent alight following a string of amazing performances at Euro 2008 - and reports suggest that Sir Alex Ferguson has shortlisted the player as a potential cut-price replacement for want-away star Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo's shocking outburst - which read as a transfer request - has left his immediate future in doubt.

Real Madrid have made no secret of their desire to sign the free-scoring winger; though United have always remained adamant that they wouldn't let the player leave Old Trafford.

However, fans have been left seething at the player's apparent lack of loyalty and ManUtdWeb's current poll suggests that the majority of fans would now be happy to see him leave if the price is right.

If the player does move to Spain, United will need a replacement.

The player's agent Alexei Safonov has said that Zenit St.Petersburg have received five requests from England and France for the player - though he is also said that his client favours a move to La Liga.

"Given the team's [Russia's] performance, I think the transfer value has grown for Arshavin." said Safonov, speaking to Russian radio station Business FM.

"Zenit have received more than five proposals from England and France, but Arshavin wants to go to Spain - football that is suited for him."

Uefa Cup holders Zenit apparently want £16million for their star man.
