Bordeaux fail in Silvestre swoop

Staying put?
By Chris, June 24 2008
Bordeaux have admitted defeat in their bid to sign top transfer target Mikael Silvestre. The left-back has been heavily linked with a move back to his native France - but the Les Girondins president believes that the financial incentives of staying at Old Trafford will block a potential move; despite Silvestre's limited opportunities for first-team football.
30-year-old Silvestre made just six United appearances last season due to competition for places and a series of injuries.

Reports have linked him with a move away from the club - with Bordeaux, Fiorentina and Roma all linked with the player's services.

However, Bordeaux's president has admitted defeat in signing the defender. He's suggested that the financial advantages of being at United will be too much to lure the Frenchman away.

Silvestre is also in line to have a testimonial match as he is twelve months away from having spent 10 years with the club - and Jean-Louis Triaud feels this could also influence the player's decision to stay at United.

He said: "I think the possibility of Mikael Silvestre coming here has ended.

"He has a salary at Manchester United that he has no reason to forego.

"Moreover, after 10 years at that club, there is a tradition that a friendly match is organised for the benefit of the footballer with the revenue going to him."

Are these harsh words? Or is Silvestre staying at Old Trafford for a cash windfall despite limited first-team action?
