Bruce wants Old Trafford job

Bruce in?
By Chris, May 20 2008
Just weeks after guiding Wigan Athletic to Premier League, former United star Steve Bruce has admitted that he’d love to take over the management reigns at Old Trafford. The 47-year-old has already built-up a decade of managerial experience with spells at Sheffield United, Huddersfield, Crystal Palace and Birmingham.

In a surprise move, Bruce quit Brum last November and took the job at the JJB Stadium. He looked to have acquired a sinking ship - but he steered the Latics to top-flight safety with his former employers crashing back down into the Championship.

The former United star has admitted that succeeding his old mentor Sir Alex Ferguson tempts him - though the bookmakers' rank him behind the likes of Jose Mourinho, Mark Hughes, Roy Keane, David O'Leary, Carlos Queiroz and Martin O'Neill for the Old Trafford hotseat.

"Whether you are playing or managing, you want to get to the top of your profession." said Bruce.

"You are always striving to be good and if you are going to do this job then why not set you aspirations and sights on going to the very top. If I can or if I get the opportunity then who knows?

"Eight months ago, I would have been lucky to have got the Scunthorpe job. It's very surprising how quickly things can turn around."

Capped only once for England's 'B' squad, Bruce spent nine successful years with United and notched up well over 300 appearances. Would you like to see him take over from Sir Alex? Have your say on the messageboard.
