United to face Pompey in Community Shield

FA Cup hero
By Chris, May 20 2008
Manchester United will play Portsmouth for the Community Shield on August 10th at Wembley Stadium. Pompey won the F.A Cup on Saturday afternoon with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Cardiff City – meaning the south-coast club will enter European competition for the same time next season. The win also secured their participation in August’s Community Shield curtain-raiser.

Nwanwko Kanu struck eight minutes before half-time to cap a fine performance and secure that Portsmouth won the F.A Cup for the second time.

Pompey, of course, knocked 10-man United out of the competition at the quarter-final stage - denying the fans at least one trip to Wembley.

The two teams will now go head-to-head for the Community Shield on August 10th at Wembley Stadium. Pompey are certain to provide a stern test for United - particularly after chief executive Peter Storrie promised Redknapp a boost of summer transfer funds following their Cup triumph.

United won the traditional curtain-raiser in 2007 with a penalty shoot-out win against Chelsea. However, fans showed a degree of apathy towards the match with thousands streaming for the exits before the spot-kicks were taken.
