Barcelona confirm Pique deal nearly done

Barca Boy?
By Chris, May 19 2008
Manchester United defender Gerard Pique looks set to make a switch to La Liga giants Barcelona. The towering centre-half looks a superb prospect for the future but has seen his first-team chances limited at Old Trafford. The Catalan club have been interested in the youngster for some time and a £5million deal looks certain to be concluded in the coming weeks.

Pique has been linked with the Nou Camp for several weeks and Barca's sporting director Txiki Bergiristain has confirmed that a deal is on the table.

"Things are at an advanced stage," said Bergiristain.

"I can't deny that he is one of the players we're interested in, but he is involved in the Champions League final so things are on hold."

The 21-year-old looks a tremendous talent but has been left frustrated by a lack of first-team chances. He sits behind Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Wesley Brown in the pecking order and will hope a move to Spain will lease new life into his career.

Personally, I'll be disappointed to see Pique leave. His height, ability in the air and composure make him stand out as a tremendous prospect for the future. However, without the guarantee of first-team football,  the Spaniard was unlikely to hang around for the long-term.

A £5million move looks certain to be agreed over the summer - but will the club regret the sale? Have your say on the messageboard.
