A legend
Ferguson officially opened the JJB Stadium in 1999 - with Manchester United chosen as special guests to play a friendly match at the new stadium. United won the ‘glamour friendly' 2-0 - just months after securing a historic Treble.
Almost nine years later, Sir Alex Ferguson found himself gracing the JJB turf again to lift the Premier League crown. It was his tenth title success at the helm - and the club's seventieth. He now travels to Moscow looking to emulate his European success of 1999.
The Scotsman was appointed United boss in November 1986. He succeeded Ron Atkinson - and the club sat fourth from bottom in the First Division. Fergie was charged with the job of making United a force, once again, at the very top of the Football League. He has succeeded with flying colours.
MUFC are now the biggest and most successful football club on the planet.
Some of the club's corporate antics can leave the true fan feeling alienated, but United's superb success over the last two decades has been founded on hard-work, determination and resolve. Sir Alex has revolutionised the football club beyond anyone wildest dreams.
We now head to Moscow to face cheque-book Chelsea. Ferguson is occasionally criticised for failing to win more trophies on the continent. He's lifted the European Cup once and the Cup Winners' Cup since taking the helm. In contrast, Milan have been crowned European champions five times, Real Madrid three and Barcelona have won two European Cups and two Cup Winners' Cup.
I just pray that United can produce one more winning performance on Wednesday, 21st to add to Fergie's artillery of silverware. A win against Chelsea would see Sir Alex get his hands on an amazing twenty-ninth trophy since arriving at the club in 1986. He also won an incredible number of major honours in Scotland - and the full list is below:
