Sir Alex and Grant speak out ahead of big finale

Confident mood
By Chris, May 10 2008
Sir Alex Ferguson and Avram Grant have entered a fierce war of words as we approach the final day of the Premier League title race. Fergie has accused Bolton Wanderers of ill-preparation ahead of the game, whilst Grant has raised the absurd idea of a title-deciding ‘play-off’ match if the top teams finish level on points.

Ferguson was fuming after reading reports that Bolton's players have spent the week celebrating after effectively securing the Premier League survival.

The Trotters can, mathematically, still be relegated but go into the final day in a hugely strong position thanks to their superior goal difference over their rivals.

"People are talking about Wigan's integrity but no one has even mentioned Bolton," said Sir Alex.

"One team is all keyed up to play Manchester United and the other one is celebrating."

However, the Scotsman doesn't appear worried. He breezed through Friday's press conference with a smile, a subtle dig at Bolton's preparatory efforts and unequivocal praise for United's travelling band of supporters.

"We are going to Wigan with a genuine chance of winning the league and we will be supported by some fantastic fans," he added.

"I imagine it will be half United and half Wigan and you don't often get that in the Premier League."

"We would normally get around 4,000 tickets but, believe me, our fans have been buying tickets all week in the Wigan end. There will be some fantastic support for us and hopefully we won't let them down."

Meanwhile, that bundle of joy Grant has raised doubts about the format of the English league system. The 53-year-old dropped a big hint that he thinks his team will lose the title on goal difference by advocating an end-of-season play-off to determine the league champions.

"I prefer the system in Italy. If you have the same points you play a play-off and it is decided on that," he said.

"If you have the same points, you are at the same level so you need to play to see who is the better."
