Bolton were reduced to 10-men just after the 15-minute mark with James Sinclair dismissed for a rash challenge on Federico Macheda. However, they rallied and surprisingly took the lead just minutes later as Sissons lashed a superb, long-range effort passed United 'keeper Ron-Robert Zieler.
The Red Devils were frustrated for long periods by a gutsy Bolton line-up but Chris Eagles, still desperate to force his way into the first-team, levelled the scores. The skilful midfielder tucked home the rebound after Danny Drinkwater's effort was saved.
16-year-old Macheda settled the contest with the winning goal six minutes later as he fired home a powerful cross from David Gray. United, now brimming with confidence, came close to extending their lead in the closing stages but will be content with the 2-1 win.
United will face either Accrington Stanley or Liverpool in the final. The Owd Reds field their first-team in the Lancashire Senior Cup and, having secured League Two safety, will be anxious to give their small band of supporters more reasons to celebrate.
Brian McClair's reserves can now look forward to two finals - having already booked a place in the last two of the Manchester Senior Cup.
