Essien strike keeps the title race alive

Down to the wire....
By Chris, April 18 2008
Chelsea delivered a message of intent to United with a hard-fought 1-0 win at Goodison Park which keeps the title race very much alive. We’re now under immense pressure on Saturday in the Lancashire derby away to Blackburn Rovers. United currently lead the table by two points with a game in hand – but that tricky trip to Stamford Bridge could yet prove decisive.

The two teams went into the game in remarkably similar circumstances.

Chelski were trying to keep in touch with United, with Everton hoping to stay in reach of fourth-placed Liverpool. Both were five points behind - both have inferior goal differences.

Michael Essien decided the contest. He floated home the only goal of the game four minutes before the half-time whistle.

Chelsea had chances to win the game but again lacked the cutting edge that cost them against Wigan on Tuesday. However, there was to be no late drama this time as Avram Grant's men held on to keep the title race very much alive.

It's still United's to lose. Our vastly superior goal difference means a draw at Ewood Park, defeat at Chelsea and wins against West Ham and Wigan would almost certainly secure a seventeenth championship crown.
