£130,000-per-week for a defender?

Wealthy man
By Chris, April 15 2008
Football really has gone crazy. Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand's new five-year deal is rumoured to be worth a whopping £130,000-per-week. With the automatic cup scheme in place, ticket prices rising and increasing restrictions placed on supporters, it rubs salt into the wounds to read that the former Leeds star is being paid in excess of £6.5million per year.

Of course, it's good news for United that Ferdinand has, according to his agent, put pen-to-paper on a new five-year deal with the club.

Ferdinand has been on impressive form this season and has formed a formiddable partnership with Nemanja Vidic at the heart of United's backline.

The 29-year-old has now committed his long-term future to the club just weeks after saying he'd like to retire as a Manchester United player.

However, £130k-per-week is scandalous. Footballers become more out of touch with the fans as each days passes and the new England captain is now earning more in a week than most Reds season ticket holders earn in four years.

Ferdinand joined United in 2002 in a £30million deal which infuriated Leeds fans. He's had a roller-coaster ride at OT but now looks certain to stay with the club for the forseeable future.
