Motors Finally Win |
|
The Motormen came out looking very sharp and created there first chance after just four minutes when Peter Cumiskey saw his effort well saved by the visiting keeper and then Cullen likewise pulling of a great save from Southport number one Steve Dickenson. As Vauxhall continued to play the better, against the run of play Southport were rewarded with an indirect free kick as Craig Robinson was guilty of obstructing the strikers path towards goal. Chris Price layed the ball off to Kevin Leadbetter who drove the ball against a defender that deflected the ball past Tony Dittmer who had no chance. With Motors' a goal behind it did much to inspire them as they equalised eight minutes later. The home side broke just as quick as Arsenal do, when Carl Nesbitt recieved a pass from a defender and immediately broke and played a wonderful through ball down the middle that top scorer Terry Fearns lacthed onto and took around Dickenson to put the game at 1-1. It was the strikers 24th goal of this years campaign as he looks to burst the 40 goal mark by the end of the season for the second time in his Vauxhall career. The Motormen that caused problems for the visitors. The lively Terry Fearns struck a shot on goal that appeared to strike a Southport hand in the area and the ref thought so to as he immediately pointed to the spot despite protests from the Sandgrounders. You would probably put your mortgage on Peter Cumiskey converting the spot kick but you would have lost as Dickenson dived to his left to keep the score level. Moments later Steve Pickford was given is marching orders when he flew in on Robbie Lawton. With Southport reduced to 10 men the Vauxhall players surely thought it could be the day to gain their first three points under Owen Brown. Half Time: Vauxhall Motors 1-1 Southport After the fifteen minute break both teams came out and played well to put both Dittmer and Dickenson to the test. 13 minutes into the half saw the excellent debutant Roberts, on loan from Crewe turn and fire his shot past the keeper but the upright prevented the youngster from scoring a debut goal. Despite some good pressure from the home team it was the visitors that took the lead for the second time. Intelligent play by the first goalscorer Leadbetter who squared to Robinsin who made no mistake from eight yards. It took just one minute for Vauxhall to equalise again. Peter Cumiskey found the net to set up an interesting 15 minutes to the end. The Motormen built on that goal and took the lead for the first and most important time of the game. Peter Cumisikey grabbed his brace as he played a one-two of a corner, his shot curled inside the near post and Owen Brown was well on the way to his first league win. Owen Brown shared his delight with the Pioneer as the said ""I'm so pleased that the win has finally come in the league, it was long overdue. In the last four weeks we have pushed on and seen a level of improvement and become stronger and I think today, with the addition of the two Crewe boys, I thought for the first time that we had three good subs, and three or four good lads not involved at all. "And we said to the squad before the game, it doesn't matter who you are or how long you've been here or how long you're worn that number, if you're not performing, you're out. And I think that was a big bonus for us today." He added: "We took the game by the scruff of the neck, we passed the ball around and played really well. When I saw their first goal go in, I thought there goes our bad luck again, but the way we were playing I didn't think it would be long before we got back on level terms. Full Time: Vauxhall Motors 3-2 Southport Man of the Match: The whole team. Each and every player played really well and contributed to the vital three points. Teams: Motors Dittmar, Betts, McDermott, Robinson, Roberts, Lynch, Nesbitt, Lawton, Fearns, Cullen, Cumiskey. Subs: Macauley, McCann, Spellman |
