Motors Come From Behind

Owen Brown saw his team come from behind and earn a point for the first time as manager. During the half there were alot of fouls from both teams. The visitors are just two places above Vauxhall so it was a vital game that neither side could really afford to lose.

The Motormen came out looking the more likely team to score and playing some good football. The Whitby defence was looking pretty solid as Vauxhall tried to open the scoring.

After a quarter of an hour Motors' were getting closer and started testing the keeper but the visiting keeper Dave Campbell was more than equal to them. Robbie Lawton had two identical opportunities to make the keeper work but when in space he dwelled on both occasions and the chances went begging. Dave Campbell was at his best as he then kept out shots from on-form Peter Cumiskey and Carl Macauley aswell.

Half Time: Vauxhall Motors 0-0 Whitby Town

At the start of the second half Vauxhall continued to create openings and Campbell was put to the test again. Motors' attacking midfielder Peter Cumiskey produced a great header towards the far post but an even better save fron Campbell prevented the home side taking the lead.

The visitors started to attack a little and twice Vauxhall's defence was not up to scratch as they tried to clear the lines. Mike Kinsella was called into action for the first time in the game and did very well to save Scott Nicholson's shot with his legs. There luck ran out the second time as Whitby took the lead on just before the hour mark.

Vauxhall defender Craig Robinson was unable to clear the ball to safety and Anthony Ormerod pounced on the loose ball and used his strength to shrug off Carl Macauley before striking passed Kinsella.

On 66 minutes it could of, and almost did get even worse for Vauxhall. A totally unmarked Graham Robinson saw his attempted lob land on top of the net much to the relief of the Vauxhall defence who again failed to mark their opponents.

Neal McCann then gave way for striker Aaron Rey who began the game very sharp and nearly scored as he met Robbie Lawton's cross with his head but failed to trouble Campbell.

With just 12 minutes remaining Vauxhall hit back when the top scorer Terry Fearns took his scoring tally to 20. Aaron Rey was again involved with the move as he reached the by-line and cut it back to Terry Fearns who rarely misses from 12 yards out and finally Camobell was beaten. This set up the last ten minutes nicely as Vauxhall pushed for their first league win under Owen Brown.

The very lively sub Aaron Rey could have been a super sub when he got on the end of Cumiskey's cross only to see his header go agonisingly over the upright. The visitors had the last chance of the match when Graham Robinson struck his shot just wide of the post.

Owen Brown took a possitive from this match as he saw his men come from behind for the first time under him.

Full Time: Vauxhall Motors 1-1 Whitby Town

Man of the Match: Terry Fearns for an excellent performance and a good 20th goal this season.

Teams:

Motors: Kinsella, Macauley, McDermott, Robinson, Griffiths (Dawes 73), Lynch (Cullen 64), Nesbitt, Lawton, Fearns, McCann (Rey 64), Cumiskey.

Hugh Macauley has left Rivacre Park for Conference outfit Forest Green Rovers. Also Derek Ward as been released, so Owen Brown has got a tough job on his hands to bring in players and strengthen the squad. The Motormen take a trip to Harrogate Town on Saturday who currently lie in third place.
