Back On Track

Owen Brown recorded his first win in charge as manager that ended Vauxhall's poor run of 11 straight games without a win or a clean sheet.

Vauxhall came out looking for revenge over Rossendale, as this was the side that dumped them out of this competiton last season.

The Motormen came out and played in a fashion that the home crowd had not seen for about two months. They dominated the opening 20 minutes and then the deadlock was broken.

The goal came on 21 minutes when Rossendale's defence failed to clear the line. Peter Cumiskey took full advantage as he ran through and struck a shot from the edge of the area that the visiting keeper had no chance of saving.

The Motormen continued to dominate right up until the interval but were unable to increase their 1-0 advantage.

Half Time: Vauxhall Motors 1-0 Rossendale United

The visitors came out started to put pressure on the Motors back line, but new recruit Mike Kinsella was on hand to save any attempts and was determined to keep a clean sheet on his debut.

Vauxhall scored the vital second goal they needed on 65 minutes. Good work from striker Terry Fearns on the right, led to him cutting in and pulling back for Peter Cumiskey to claim his brace as he struck home with his weaker left foot in style.

Motors then dashed any hopes of a Rossendale come-back, when skipper Kevin Lynch sent Fearns off on a run down the left channel, who then picked out Robbie Lawton who vollyed home the third and final goal.

A much needed win for Vauxhall and lets hope that this game can lift the players for the remainder of the season.

Owen Brown summarised the game in an interview with the Pioneer by saying 'It's a big relief to get a victory. The lads played well and got the goals they deserved. It was also pleasing to keep a clean sheet as the goals had been flying in from all over the place when I came here. You can't sort something like that out in 10 minutes but, hopefully, some of the things we're trying to implement are now coming into place.'
