Motors Crash Out Of Cup |
| In a very entertaining replay at Lambeth Grove, Woodley were the ones that added
Vauxhall to their tally of cup scalps. They knocked Stockport out in the last round and now they
set up a tie at home to Stalybridge Celtic.
A brilliant opening half hour for The Motormen as they dominated the game and were rewarded when a Motors player was brought down. From the resulting free kick former Tranmere Rovers defender Alan Griffiths stepped up and drilled home his first for the club and gave Vauxhall an early adavantage over the hosts. The visitors could only keep hold of their slight adavantage for eight minutes. Woodley mounted their first real attack of the game that saw Mike Horton all alone on the right, who hit a brilliant strike that went in off the far post. The hosts were in front just five minutes later and what a goal it was. Greg Bickell was found unmarked on the left touch line, from then on he decided to go solo and eventually he produced a fantastic goal that put Woodley in the driving seat as the half came to an end. Half Time: Woodley Sports 2-1 Vauxhall Motors Five minutes after the restart, if you thought it could not get any worse for Vauxhall, it did. Martin Andrews struck a shot that even he thought Hilton would get, but fortunately for him Hilton somehow let it slip under him and into the back of the net. Vauxhall failed to give up and kept battling and were rewarded with a goal. Peter Cumiskey's cross was met well by the head of Fearns who beat the Woodley keeper on 63 minutes. With 90 minutes almost at an end, new recruit Aaron Rey headed home a late equaliser and put the game into extra time. End Of 90 Minutes: Woodley Sports 3-3 Vauxhall Motors Half an hour seperated Vauxhall Motors and the next round. The Motormen would have gone through on the away goal ruling. Hopes of The Motormen going through was put to an end when four minutes from time Woodley's Simon Hackley's 45 yard counter attack led to him being one-on-one with Hilton as he made no mistake in slotting home the winner After Extra Time: Woodley Sports 4-3 Vauxhall Motors Man of the Match: Aaron Rey for an inspired performance on his debut and a well taken goal to cap it off. Teams: Motors Hilton, Robinson, McDermott, Griffiths, Whelan, Lynch, Nesbitt, Lawton, Fearns, Rey, Cumiskey. McCann (Griffiths 77). |
| Next up for Vauxhall is Rossendale in the UniBond League Cup at Rivacre Park. |
