Motors Stalled

Gainsborough came into this tie without a win at Rivacre Park in more than three years, and Vauxhall desperate to get back towards the higher regions of the league.

Derek Ward returned to the starting line-up for Motors while Robbie Lawton started on the bench.

Early on a Gainsborough cross was dealt with by Andy Ralph although Trinity players and fans alike called for a foul on Gareth Grant in the process.

Motors could have took the lead minutes later when a Peter Cumiskey cross was dropped by Andy Ralph's opposite number, the spill allowed Kevin Lynch to shoot, only for a deflection to put it out.

Cumiskey and Nesbitt worked a free-kick straight from the training ground which resulted in Wacker hitting the post.

A Smith corner on 25 minutes and found the head of Hurst who put the visitors ahead.

Mortimer tried to double the away teams advantage by trying his luck from long range, and it wasn't far off.

Fearns desperate to stay on his scoring spree went close in the early stages of the second half.

The visitors again went close to doubling their advantage when Hurst's header came back off the post Ellington should have scored off the rebound , but Whelan cleared.

Vauxhall had the chance to draw level when Hurst brought down Substitute Anton Lally in the box. Carl Nesbitt stepped up, the last time he took a Motors penalty was against QPR and scored. This time round Holmshaw saved to the home teams dismay.

Gainsborough did however double their lead late on Lee Ellington sealing all three points for the visitors.

Man of the Match: Andy Ralph

made a couple of good saves to kepp Trinity at bay.

Vauxhall host Alsager Town in the Cheshire Senior Cup in midweek, with a trip to Stainton Park next Saturday to face newly promoted Radcliffe Borough.
