Northampton Town 2 – 4 Dundee

Northampton – Chambers 13

Dundee (4-3-3): Speroni; Mackay, Mair, Wilkie, Hernandez; Rae, Nemsadze, Smith; Milne, Carranza, Lovell

Northampton (4-3-3): Glyn Thomson; Luke Chambers, Paul Reid, Chris Wilmott, Peter Clark; Hartley, Oliver Burgess, Paul Harsley; Paul Trollope, Josh Low, Martin Smith

minutes - Wilkie chests off the line

minutes - Good build up from Northampton, a cross into the box is cleared only as far as young Luke CHAMBERS. He sends a right foot shot drilled from edge of area in by Speroni's right-hand post to give the Cobblers the lead.

minutes - An equaliser for Dundee, a right foot finish from LOVELL at the edge of area.

minutes - Mackay crosses to Milne, who heads against the post. Dundee win a corner, and then another after clearance off line.

minutes - Dundee win their 4th corner. Carranza volley at goal ruled out for offside. Dundee support coming through loud and clear - "Hey Caballero" and "F*** You" easily recognisable.

minutes - Northampton's first two corners in quick succession, dipping volley from Burgess wide of the target.

minutes - Speroni clears at full stretch after pass-back from Mair almost goes wrong.

minutes - Trollope makes good challenge to block onrushing Gavin Rae.

minutes - Carranza tries to get away from Reid but Wilmott does very well to come across and cover.

minutes - Lovell almost put through into area but Wilmott and Reid combine to clear the danger.

minutes - Carranza rounds Clark on the right flank and sends a cross to Milne who heads over the crossbar but should have done better.

minutes - Carranza breaking, two against two, but Reid concedes a fifth corner for Dundee. Carranza finds Nemsadze, who plays through ball for Mair, but he's offside.

minutes - Milne rounds Wilmott and takes a left-hand shot but just past the post

minutes - A sixth corner for the Dark Blues. Carranza corner goes past almost everyone and Gavin Rae drives it back into the six yard box for MILNE to prod the Dees in front.

minutes - Seventh corner for Dundee. Wilkie gets up for a header and sends the ball towards the goal. Steve LOVELL turns it past the keeper to make the score 3-1 Dundee.

minutes - A corner for Northampton but cleared easily.

Half-time summary - Sounds like a fairly open match, with play switching from end to end. Northampton have had chances, but by and large the Dundee defence has been solid. Dundee have had 7 corners to the Cobblers' 3, and Beto's deliveries into the box are causing their defence problems. Lovell sounds like he's making a lot of running, despite having to go off briefly for treatment during the first 15 minutes. Former Rangers youngster Paul Reid sounds like an excellent signing as he marshalls the Northampton defence, but Dundee's three-pronged attack with Beto, Savo and Lovell are proving too strong for the Nationwide 3rd Division side. Some confusion about whether Rae or Milne scored, Rae sent the ball across but did Savo get a touch? After hitting the post midway through the half I'm sure Savo will want to claim it.

Fan watch - Allan Kettles reports a sizeable contingent of Dees Down South members in the 400-strong Dark Blue support (twice what the Arabs took to Airdrie United). They are certainly very vocal by the sounds of things.

Trivia - the referee, Paul Walton, apparently a well-known Cobblers fan!

minutes - Lawrie Dudfield on for Northampton. No half-time changes for Dundee. A through ball for Milne sees Thomson smartly off his line to avert the danger.

minutes - Clark into area and takes a tumble as he meets Speroni, but the offside flag is already up.

minutes - Cobblers' left back Peter Clark is have trouble handling Milne on the right hand side. He clears as far as Beto, who shoots over the bar.

minutes - Northampton are sitting back when Dundee have possession in their own half. Paul Harsley replaced by Mark Richards as Northampton switch from 4-3-3 to 4-4-2.

minutes - Lee Wilkie is replaced by Tom Hutchinson, and Brent Sancho comes on to make his debut, replacing Lee Mair. The new central defensive partnership is cheered on by the large Dundee support.

minutes - Hernandez looking comfortable on the ball, exchanges passes with Smith and Rae, then Sancho gets his first touch and plays a one-two with Nemsadze. Dundee passing the ball comfortably around and the Tayzurri are cheering every pass with an "Ole!"

minutes - Nemsadze plays the ball wide to Mackay, who moves into the corner of the area and cuts the ball back to Rae, but Dudfield makes an important challenge.

minutes - Mark Richards' flick releases Josh Low, who shoots just over the bar from 18 yards.

minutes - Speroni catches a cross ball under pressure from Low.

minutes - Martin Smith creates a chance out of nothing and almost chips Speroni, who was almost caught off his line but backtracks and catches the ball under the crossbar.

minutes - Impressive passing from Dundee sees Lovell break into the box, and he's eventually closed down by Reid who concedes yet another corner.

minutes - Nacho Novo replaces Beto to warm applause from the travelling support.

minutes - Milne concedes a free kick on the edge of the Dundee box. Burgess takes it and curls it in but Speroni claims it easily.

minutes - Good play by Dudfield and a cross by Smith is again claimed well by Speroni.

minutes - Dundee break quickly upfield from Speroni's throw out and Nacho Novo gets a shot in but it goes wide.

minutes - Rae works a one-two in midfield with Novo and chips the ball into the box, causing some confusion amongst the home defenders but Wilmott eventually clears.

minutes - Ball played into the box and Novo gets a shot in but drags it across goal and out for a throw.

minutes - Australian international Mark Robertson comes on for Dave Mackay and Garry Brady comes on for Nemsadze.

minutes - Northampton win a fourth corner, conceded by Mackay, which is delivered into the box by Burgess but cleared by the head of Gavin Rae.

minutes - Tough tackling from both sides and the referee awards a drop-ball as he's not sure who should be penalised but wants to calm things down.

minutes - Another Cobblers corner crossed high and Sancho rises to put the ball behind. Curled in, cleared to Richards whose shot it blocked. Josh Low
sends the rebound back into the box and Richards heads the ball over the line to make it 3-2 Dundee.

minutes - Right footed volley from Novo goes wide.

minutes - Fabian Caballero on for Dundee to replace Lovell.

minutes - Josh Low cross cut out at the near post.

minutes - Shot just past from Northampton for a corner.

minutes - Martin Smith header just over the bar. The commentary sounds like we're under a bit of pressure, but according to Allan Kettles at the game, we're simply sitting back and not in too much danger. We could have scored more this half but for some slack finishing.

minutes - Neat interplay sees Novo send a shot in which deflects off Paul REID and it's 4-2 Dundee courtesy of Reid's second o.g. of the pre-season campaign.

minutes - Savo makes way for Tom Cowan. Not sure if he'll have a chance to make much of an impression with just a few minutes left. Hernandez has sounded very comfortable on the ball this afternoon at left back.

minutes - Richards sends a drive well over the bar in the final attack of the game.

Full time summary - A good workout for the Dees. Plenty of second-half substitutions disrupted the play, but it sounds like quite a competitive game. We seemed content to sit back and pass the ball around for much of the second half, although we had plenty of chances on the break. Novo could perhaps have added to the score, but everyone except Langfield got a run-out. Dundee are now unbeaten in nine pre-season fixtures, and the under-21s have the chance to make it ten at Montrose on Monday night. Roll on Motherwell!

Cobblers watch - The Northampton internet commentary was blissfully unbiased. They seem very impressed by the Dees and comment on our superb passing, in particular Nemsadze and Carranza. Comment also on our patient build-up - a trademark of our play - if only everyone at Dens was so generous at times.

Official crowd - 2580 (including 428 visiting fans).
