Kinnear's position had become pretty much untenable, and his decision to walk before he was pushed should be welcomed by the fans, He said: "I feel that it is in the best interests of the club that I resign and give my successor the chance to turn things around with half of the season left.
"I've no regrets about joining Forest - it's the best Club I've had the privilege to manage. I've had the whole-hearted support of the Chairman and my staff and marvellous backing from the supporters, which I will always be grateful for."
Kinnear, who took over from Paul Hart last February, and guided Forest to safety in some style, just could not find the right formula this season and the club now find themselves needing a successor to inspire a similiar rescue act less than 12 months on. "I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone connected with the Club all the very best for the future.
"I sincerely hope to see Nottingham Forest playing their football in the Championship next season."
Mick Harford will be in charge for Friday's match against East Midlands neighbours Leicester City, and he will be favourite to get the post for the rest of the season. He didn't leave Luton solely to be Joe Kinnear's assistant in this reporters eyes.
