Nottingham Forest failed to build on an early Gareth Taylor goal as the reds slipped to a devastating loss against fellow strugglers Gillingham this afternoon.
Ex-Notts County striker Tommy Johnson fired the winner after Forest were harshly penalised for a handball against Wes Morgan.
Forest, after a shaky start, had settled pretty well and when stand-in skipper Andy Reid had whipped in a good cross which was met by a quality header by Taylor it seemed Forest would go on to dominate as they searched for their first away win in the Championship this season.
And had Gills keeper Jason Brown not tipped over a Reid 30-yard drive they might just have been contemplating an away win; however Forest were guilty of sitting back on their lead in the second period and were to pay the penalty in the final quarter.
Morgan was penalised for a handball in the Forest penalty area on 76 minutes - replays have shown it to be harsh - and Darius Henderson made mo mistake from the spot sending Paul Gerrard in the Forest goal the wrong way.
Henderson then had a header turned onto the crossbar by Gerrard before Johnson capitalised on slack Forest marking to lash the ball into the top corner of the net to record a priceless victory for the Gills and hammering a real body blow to Forest in their quest for survival.
