AS Airdrie 3-0 Firhill United

Airdrie's new season got off to an intresting start as they faced a league cup tie at home to first division Firhill.

Long term crock kenny Pardoe was joined by Graeme Morrison on the injury list, Burton,Smith & Ross Graham had personal Matters to attend to Brady and Cooper on Holiday Capaldi & McCall working left Airdrie rather short, Kieran Hughes came into the side after only one training session with 16 year old Michael McPake joined on the bench by Paul Scanlon and Steven Layden who were happy to help out.

As it turned out no subs were required as the game came to a premature end after 55 mins, The executive will deal with the abandonment therefor I wont go into detail but will state no player or official from AS Airdrie was involved.

Onto the football that did take place and Airdrie took an early lead when Clark's long ball sent Gray racing clear and he beat the keeper to put the home side 1 up after 5 minutes. It was 2 after 33 mins as Shaw's run was halted by a mistimed tackle to hand Scott Lindsay a chance from the spot. Lindsay found the bottom left corner giving the keeper little chance. several oppetunities to create a chance were squandered before lindsay effectively killed the game with a 3rd on the stroke of half time. Clark with a sharp long throw from his own half caught Firhill napping and Lindsay made the run from midfield to strike a half volley past the keeper from 18 yards.

Half Time 3-0

Second half was minutes old as Airdrie were awarded a 2nd spot kick from a corner Shaw collected the loose clearance and made his way into the box he rode the first mistimed challenge but the second one took the wingers legs from under him. Lindsay on a hat trick stepped up but broke his run and the referee awarded an indirect free kick to Firhill, Lindsay's complaints were imaterial as Jp in the Firhill goal had made the stop low to his right. A few minutes later Gray won a throw in on the far side and that was the last action with the ball.

We await an exec decision and will presume nothing as yet so we aim to get off the mark at EK Accies on tuesday night before a home tie with Whinhall United next Saturday.

MOM: Andy Slevin - won everything on the ground and in the air.
