Broomfield Bulletin Airdrie Vs Rangers 08/08/1980 (Extracts)
By Stomp Admin June 16 2009 Airdrie, encouraged by that midweek Anglo-Scottish Cup win over First Division champions Hearts make their Premier League debut this afternoon against a Rangers side which had probably done more than any other Scottish Club to strengthen their challenge on the home front.
Airdrie beat Hearts with an aggregate 6 - 3 win, to earn a place against "Anglo" opponents in the Anglo-Scottish Cup.
Behave..... or Else! A Plea (warning) was printed in this program! This club will do all in its power to ensure safe conditions for spectators and the Scottish League in a strongly worded circular to all clubs, is indicating a no-nonsense approach to suporters misbeaviour.
Boss Talk It seems some things never change, manager Bobby Watson states "And before the cynics in this town start.....'They'll only come crashing down'.... Let me remind you that these young lads have given the club somethig the fans have been shouting about for years....PROMOTION.

Davies Debut Drama This section covered Davie Thomson, in his debut 90 minutes he scored two goals that helped Aidrie to a 3-0 Anglo Scottish Cup home win over Hearts. David went on to make 42 appearances for the Diamonds, 14 full 28 subs and scored only 4 goals.
Todays Game Saw the first showing of our new kit, from Umbro!
Coming soon The Airdrie squad and Rangers team line up.
Remeber this game pretty well (despite only being 9 at the time). It was the 1st time my dad took me to the stand rather than the terracing. I'm sure there are still some skelfs from the bench-seats lodged in my flabby butt-cheeks.
One of my fav ever broomfield memories (as mentioned in previous post)......
In wee pocket of red behind goal (at the away end). Equaliser memory still brings out the old goosebumps
I was backshift for that game an the work refused time off. I was gutted. 2 days before the game they were lookin for volunteers to work at it. Put my name down straight away.
Saw most of the game but more importantly was standing behind the goal when Walker equalised. Magic !!! an that "wee pocket of red" in the crowd behind me went wild !!!
I think this was the last the wee pocket ever went there, and were behind goals only because we were forced by the police, after that it was our customary place in the covered terrace.
Not so sure about that Airdrieonian. I can recall standing on the covered terracing before 1980 surrounded by the hordes of Gers fans and damn few polis to be seen.
Might have been around the year the flute bands welcomed the visiting 18000 or so to the town...

I remember that match well. 21 December 1974 as I recall and I think we were 2-0 up after about 5 minutes! I remember that when we were 3-2 up the referee was doing all he could to help Rangers back into the match but we made it 4-2 and although they got a late goal, it was too late. Was also at Ibrox for the return fixture and we won 1-0 in front of 63,000 which would be the biggest attendance at any league match I've ever been to. Sadly, it would probably take us several seasons to accumulate a 63,000 attendace figure through our doors these days!
