Clydebank United 2-0 AS Airdrie

Clydebank united 2-0 AS Airdrie

The outsider looking in would think Airdrie’s tough schedule had caught up with them but that wasn’t the case here as poor finishing inept refereeing and some inspired goalkeeping all contributed to the loss. This was far from a one sided affair though as Clydebank were strong throughout and had some good passages of play particularly the when the wide men got involved. The glut of games did of course play a part and was clearly a major factor in Gray pulling up with a hamstring injury 15 minutes into the game, a severe blow for the 25-goal striker. Ian Shaw replaced gray up front to link up with Capaldi, However Airdrie’s best chance of the half fell to Cooper who powered in a trademark header from a corner kick, The keeper pulled of a great reaction save and was alert enough to prod the loose ball away from the danger area. At the other end Rowan had to look lively on a few occasions as Clydebank threatened. The half ended 0-0 though.

A tactical change at half time saw Neil Pardoe switch wings and Morrison move up from full back to curb Clydebank’s use of the wings and to a degree this worked well as most of the play was now going through the middle which allowed Edgar and Grant to get into the game more. Airdrie wasted a host of chances in this half whilst Clydebank took two of there’s Shaw and Grant both wasted one on ones with the keeper getting the better of both, though Shaw recovered his chance before being hauled down for a stonewall penalty which unsurprisingly was turned down, Airdrie were denied another spot kick when Capaldi was manhandled at a corner and bundled into the net with the defender showing no interest in actually defending the set piece, again there was no hope in hell of getting  anything  even though it was as cast iron as they come. This referee clearly has an agenda with our side as it happens on every occasion. Grant also had a shot cleared off the line with a last ditch tackle and the keeper pulled off a further two point blank saves to give his side the points. At the end Airdrie’s players were shattered especially the guys who played the full 180 minutes over the two evenings but take nothing away from Clydebank’s good performance clearly there guys were looking for starting places for Saturdays semi final, We on the other hand can only hope to get a couple of the injured players back and the players get a good rest between now and Saturday before we face NC United in the Tommy Marshall trophy. MOM Neil Grant.
