Airdrie Coast by Blue Brazil
By Stomp Admin April 15 2008
Airdrie virtually secured second spot in the Irn Bru second division tonight after we coasted by Cowdenbeath, it's now up to others to prove that they are better than us when the play offs come around. Should it be two up and two down? I think so but we have to accept the limitation placed on us and fight for a future in the Irn Bru first division.

It was four going on eight tonight and we didn't score a bad goal. In the simplest of terms the midfield stepped up to the mark tonight, with goals, good play and some fantastic runnning.

Cowdenbeath played there part in the game, they needed a result tonight and tried to play attacking football and for the opening moments it was a pretty even match. After the initial panic was over Airdrie attempted to take control of the match, keeping the ball with an Airdrie player means your opposition can't score.

It's not nice sometimes but that's football and as long as the result goes your way you can accept it. Finally it was the Diamonds who made the break through, a low cross ball from the near side caught the Cowdenbeath defence flat footed and Andreoni with the slightest of touches scored the opener.

Holmes scored the second, Allan Russell knocked the ball down and his pass after what i'm sure was a deflection fell to Brian Prunty, Bryan split the Cowdenbeath central defence to find Holmes. With work to do Greame Holmes calmly took the ball around the keeper and slotted home, 2 - 0 Airdrie.

Goals three and four came from Prunty and Waddell. Brian Prunty in space at the back post slammed Airdrie's third in to the back of the net after a free kick, a goal he more than deserved for his efforts during the game.

But for me pick of the bunch was our fourth and final goal, a move started and finished by substitute Ricky Waddell.

It's not very often this season I could go on and on about a match but this is one we should be talking about. Kenny Watt had two disallowed goals after being waved offside, the second would have/ could have given Prunty his second of the match, but like all strikers Watt is hungry for goals. Noble entertained on the near side with step overs and flicks that only work when your confidence is high, any other time you look like an arse.

In the end 4 - 0 and the Diamonds go home happy.

I agree with your summation Chris. As one of the regular "moaners" I still long for my team to perform well, and tonight was a very competent performance. Similar to the Ross County game, we seemed to move the ball a bit faster and created more goalmouth incidents. (much better than our 1 feeble attempt in 2 successive games v Raith and Ayr recently).
Admittedly Cowden were pathetic, but we looked better than usual and the place really brightens up when wee Watt appears --- he is surely one of the bright spots and a good reason to look forward to next season.
Holmes`s goal was a lovely move via a fantastic flick on by the referee which helped set it up --- best ref we`ve had in years.
I am still unconvinced that KB can get them up for the playoffs, since we have failed at every "big game" hurdle so far this season ---- but at least performances like last night give me hope.
