St Andrews & St Ambrose reach final.
By Stomp Admin April 3 2008
Two excellent games tonight at Craigneuk Parks in Airdrie, saw St Andrews pip Airdrie Academy in a nailbiting penalty shoot out, while St Ambrose overcame Chryston High in a high scoring match.
Airdrie Academy, & St Andrews, both unbeaten in their section games last week, played, what was a very close match. It was St Andrews who drew first blood, scoring early on, after some sustained Airdrie Academy pressure, with a breakaway and a cool finish. This proved to be the pattern of the game with Airdrie Academy having a lot of pressure and St Andrews defending well and proving dangerous on the break. And it wasn’t until the final minutes of the game that the Airdrie team broke through scoring the equaliser and pushing the game into penalty kicks which the Coatbridge team won 5-4.

There were goals a plenty in the other tie with two goals in the first five minutes followed by three others before half time which saw St Ambrose go into the break 3-2 ahead against the Chryston High side. Both defences were kept busy in the second half in an end to end game and both teams had good chances but it was St Ambrose who proved the stronger, scoring two more goals and running out 5-2 winners in the end.

The final between St Ambrose & St Andrews will be held at the stadium on Friday 25th April at 7.00 pm.

Thanks go to Ann Marie Ballantyne, Bryan Prunty & Kevin Watt for attending and supporting the event this evening and also to the club for providing refreshments for all the players.

Before this goes any further, quite simply the best two teams on the night won and are progressing on to the finals, yes we know it's not the same as it was but in the end it's first and second year school kids who know f\/ck all about Airdrie fans politics when it comes to this, so get over it unless you want to get of your back side and hit your heads against the same brick walls we did when the idea was initially suggested.

Is there no way we can get the old format back and invite the RC schools (who were origonally in the competition) from Airdrie and the surrounding villages to play also? Some of the Schools Cup crowds were bigger than those that we get today as it created many rivalries.

Think there used to be 2 games a night so often you got the support for 4 teams in the ground watching the 2 games.

Posted last one before your last post appeared. I'm not talking about politics of Airdrie fans. Just about the history of the competition which had fookall to do with supporting Airdrie. What were the reactions when you asked for the old format to be reintroduced?

The only way to do it would be to get two volunteers to go to every school and ask if they could set up a team, they would have to have disclosure Scotland certificates done specifically for this.

Schools just do not have the personel willing to commit the time to do these things any more and schools are involved in more competitions than just ours.Plus when primary schools are mentioned the amount of red tape and rules doubles because their not allowed to lose.

In fact the Academy team from last night have already been knocked out of one semi final and have another one to play in. Schools even have to get permission for some of the kids to play as they have already signed s forms with professional clubs.

Who knows what's going to happen, with all the amalgamations of schools we are going to be forced to look at the format, but i don't think it's ever going to go back to what it was.

Just to point out as well we do have two teachers involved with the Trust and they were pointing things out that most of the commitee didn't even know.

@#$%& red tape is a pain in the erse these days. I have 2 disclosure Scotland certificates for different things. Once you are cleared then that should be it.

I will speak to you more on this subject over a beer or 12 in the near future Crease.

As i suggested before assign each school a player or two and get them to work with the kids and coach them, evryones a winner,

Aye but you wouldnt need someone not to lose, you make it under 14/15 like it was before, and you represent the primary school you used to go to. I understand the stuff about disclsures and no male primary teachers but it just seems a poor imitation of the real thing, I cant get excited about it.

Mate, you never got excited by 3 female swingers in your car in Sheffield playing with each other so I would like to hope schools cup football would not have that effect either!
