Tynecastle 2-0 AS Airdrie
Airdrie drop in to the Tommy Marshall trophy after a scrappy game in Easterhouse. Three changes from last weeks line up saw Cooper (Holiday) and Clark (under the weather ahem) replaced By N.Pardoe and Capaldi, Top scorer Ally Gray was wrapped in cotton wool following a hip injury Neil Grant stepping in to Midfield with Kenny Pardoe pushed up beside Capaldi.
In strong winds the game was destined not to be a classic although it rarely is when two teams play each other so often this being the 6th meeting in two seasons with another to come! Tynecastle made the breakthrough early in the first half when an offside decision went against Airdrie and as Rowan tried to close the striker down the latter got to the ball first and that was enough to take it over Rowan and land just under the bar. The wind was dictating play for both sides as the game swung from one end to the other but with little football played inbetween. Andy Edgar fashioned a chane when he took the ball down the left and cut across the byeline neil Pardoe got a head to the cross but Capaldi had little space to work with the knockdown and a good chance was gone. At the other end Rowan pulled off a superb Double save to keep the away side in the tie.
The second half didn't improve much in terms of quality play but both sides kept plugging away but nothing was being created by way of clear cut chances. As the half wore on Airdrie should have been level, Neil Grant chased a lost cause and the Tynecastle keeper fully committed to getting the ball lost out and Grant was able to cut back to Capaldi who's excellent cross only needed tapped into the empty net but Edgar was stretching and made a poor contact on the ball with Neil Pardoe poised to knock it in from a better position. If that wasn't to be then the next chance really should have! Grant again broke through the home defence and laid it on a plate for Capaldi who hit a rather weak effort with only the keeper to beat, the keeper saved with his legs and the best chance of the game was gone. Airdrie threw on Clark to replace Grant who picked up a slight knock and risked Gray for Kenny Pardoe with 25 minutes left. The game became a bit tense as Airdrie searched for an equaliser and Tynecastle looked to play on the break. Morisson replaced Scott Graham with 15 minutes to play however Airdrie's day was summed up when another Capladi cross was partially cleared and Clark tried to keep the ball in play heading against the post the loose ball was knocked home but the ref had blew up for a corner, or so we thought, bizarrely he gave a goal kick deeming the ball to have crossed the line before Clark got his header in! Tynecastle wrapped the tie up in the last minute with a tidy finish, the striker picking up the scraps as Airdrie failed to deal with a long ball.
Tynecastle move in to the third round and Airdrie get a second chance in the Tommy Marshall trophy against SCYP whether you agree with the second cup or not it's another game added to the schedule. Not a lot to be disappointed about a good park but poor weather saw to a scappy game with Tynecastle deserving there win on chances taken. MOM for Airdrie today go's to Andy Edgar with an industious performance in the centre of the park.
