Gainsborough Trinity vs. Leigh RMI preview

By Matt Lawton April 10 2008
This weekend sees Leigh RMI look to continue their recent good form when they travel to Lincolnshire to face mid-table Gainsborough Trinity in the Leythers' final Saturday afternoon away fixture of the season, with a real possibility of Steve Bleasdale's side hauling themselves from the foot of the Blue Square North table.

With Tuesday night's epic 2-1 home win over Burscough leaving Leigh just two points behind second bottom Vauxhall Motors, a victory for the travelling Leythers, coupled with a Vauxhall defeat at second-placed Stalybridge, will see them achieve objective number one of getting away from bottom spot in the table, although a Hucknall Town home win over Nuneaton Borough will condemn RMI to relegation to the UniBond Premier League, regardless of the result at Northolme.

Young striker James Dunn is still struggling with an injury picked up in last weekend's 0-0 home draw with Tamworth, so revitalised striker and new cult terrace hero Gavin Salmon likely to partner Richard Chetcuti in attack, with top scorer Mark Smyth still struggling for fitness.

The two sides last met in February when, despite taking the lead through a scrambled Gavin Salmon effort, RMI fell to a 3-1 defeat, while last season's visit to Northolme came almost a year to the day on April 9th, earning a valuable point from a 0-0 draw in Leigh's eventually successful battle against the drop.

For the first time since the defeat at Solihull Moors earlier in the season, a full minibus of supporters will make the trip to support their side, with a terrific atmosphere expected to follow on from the immense vocal backing from the Hilton Park terraces that provided a boisterous soundtrack to Tuesday night's enthralling victory.

Kick off is at 3pm, get yourself down Lincolnshire and join RMI in the Great Escape!
