Leigh RMI vs. Worksop Town preview

By Matt Lawton
April 26 2007
Last season it was champions Northwich that visited Hilton Park on the last day of the season with RMI fighting to avoid relegation but this year it is effectively a play-off game against relegation rivals Worksop Town.
Having already sealed the Conference North title and promotion to the Conference, Northwich visited a sweltering Hilton Park in party mood on the final day of the season, with even the Vics' travelling army voicing their support in RMI's fight for survival in a thrilling game that was eventually won 2-1 by Leigh. Although the victory appeared to be in vain when Redditch collected enough points from their game with Barrow to finish outside of the relegation zone, a courtroom wrangle with Carshalton saw Leigh reprieved from the drop to the Unibond League.

After a thrilling season of delirious highs and crushing lows, it all comes down to one game on Saturday with RMI simply needing to avoid defeat against third bottom Worksop in order to preserve their Conference North status, with the Tigers needing all three points if they are to avoid the drop to the Unibond League.

While Worksop fell to a 1-0 home defeat to Moor Green last weekend, a late Kevin Rapley penalty grabbed a priceless point for RMI from Scarborough, condemning the Seadogs to their second successive relegation in the process.

With so much at stake on Saturday afternoon, it is sure to be a hugely dramatic occasion with a large travelling support expected, and as such an increased vocal support from the Leythers is certainly the order of the day, with the kick off at 3pm (admission costing £10 for adults, £5 for concessions).

- Following Saturday's game, RMI's annual "Player of the Year" presentation will take place in the Mick Martyn Bar
