Mowbray clinches Celtic deal
By Jemma Tappenden
June 15 2009
The only thing that now stands between Tony Mowbray and the managerial position at Celtic it appears, is as official announcment on his position from either club. After refusing point blank to match the £2 million compensation requested by Peace, Celtic briefly turned their attentions elsewhere.

But as the SPL club crawled back to the Midlands with their tail between their legs and a cheque in the other, Jeremy Peace had little choice but to allow Celtic permission to talk to the Baggies boss, with whom it soon became clear would favour a move to Scotland.

An announcment about Mowbray's appointment is expected tomorrow, Wednesday at the latest - it seems that an agreement over Mark Venus and Peter Grant; assistant manager and coach, is all that is holding up the official announcement.

I don't know how well you have read the statements from both clubs. But neither one has said the sum of 2 million was agreed. I can tell you for sure that Celtic do not work that way. While Tony was the obvious choice, Celtic are too stubborn to give in like that. They would have taken a lesser manager rather than pay the asking price. Especially after the SFA and FA told both clubs there was noting to say celtic had to pay anything. The only monioes that would have changed hands if Mowbray resigned would have been the buy-out of the contract. I guarantee that Celtic have not paid that money, but in the process allowed Mr Peace to save face. Peter Lawwell does not lose battles and you can stake your home on it, he never lost this one either.

Re: Mowbray clinches Celtic deal
I have read the statements from both clubs very clearly. I've also delved deep into the hundreds of other sources reporting this story over the last few days.

I don't know in the slightest how Celtic operate, but I do know how Jeremy Peace operates, and there isn't a chance in hell that Tony Mowbray is walking out of the door for nothing. The fans may detest the bloke, but he's made a name for hiself getting what he wants, and if he wants £2 million then you can stake your home on the fact that he is going to get it. Whether it be through compensation or cotract buy out I guarantee you he'll stick to his guns over that. The only thing that remains unclear is the exact figure Peace is expecting. Unlike the rest of the story that bit seems to be unconfirmed. But the 'Celtic source' which has reported back to the BBC seems to have made it very clear that the £2 million they will pay to West Brom will not effect Mowbray's transfer kitty.

Exactly. The guy would sell his own Grandmother I reckon - There's not a chance on this earth Mowbray is walking out of there for nothing. And why would WBA not be entitled to compensation when he's still in contract?

If he is under contract money will definately have changed hands.

Infact i would say knowing mr peace's cute side he would say '2 million it is but 3 million in the back sky rocket and we will stay silent and people can carry on believing 'celtic do not operate that way'.
