Who will win the promotion race?
By Jemma Tappenden May 4 2008
A long old season comes to a close today. But the Championship would not be the Championship if there was not something left to decide. With questions still to be answered at the top and the bottom, we take a look at the sides that could be joining the Baggies in the Premiership next season.

West Bromwich Albion - Played: 45, Points: 78, Goal Difference: 31

West Brom currently occupy the top spot and will be looking to secure the Championship title this afteroon with a trip to Loftus Road.  It would take a major disaster for Albion to not be promoted this afternoon, the only posibility being a defeat alongside a Hull victory with the Tigers making up a whopping 13 goal difference.  So who will join the Baggies in the Premiership?

Final fixture: QPR (a)

Stoke City - Played: 45, Points: 78, Goal Difference: 14

Alongside West Brom, the Potters believed they had promotion in the bag last weekend, until Hull grabbed a late winner.  Unlike the Baggies however, Stoke do not have the advantage of a significant goal difference.  Defeat for them today could see Hull snatch automatic promotion from their grasp if the Tigers were to pick up all three points.

Final Fixture: Leicester City (h)

Hull City - Played: 45, Points: 75, Goal Difference: 19

A tremendous run from last years strugglers saw them move from lower mid table obscurity to real promotion contenders.  The Tigers kept themselves in the running with victory last weekend despite spending considerable proportions of the game a goal down.  It is most likely Hull will have to take their chance in the play off lottery, but victory today will keep the pressure on second placed Stoke City.

Final Fixture: Ipswich Town (a)

Bristol City - Played: 45, Points: 71, Goal Difference: -2

Wolves fans heckled Michael McIndoe for his comments on moving from Molineux to join a bigger club.  But the former Wolves man gets the last laugh as the real suprise package have already secured a play off place.  This will come as a disappointment to many fans though after spending large parts of the season in one of the two automatic promotion places.  But there is no disputing that the side promoted from League One last season have given the whole of the Championship a real wake up call.

Watford - Played: 45, Points: 69, Goal Difference: 6

One of the favourites to secure promotion at the start of the season, but recent slumps have seen the Hornets drop out of the race for automatic promotion.  Even more worrying than that for fans is that despite occupying 5th place at present, even their play off hopes are not yet cemented.  They have a two point advantage over 7th placed Wolves, but nothing will be guaranteed for the Watford men until the end of play today.

Final Fixture: Preston (h)

Crystal Palace - Played: 45, Points: 68, Goal Difference: 11

It has not been an easy ride for Neil Warnock this season, but a recent run of form has seen the London side move into the final play off spot.  They still have  job to do this afternoon however, with three teams all stacked up behind them ready to take any advantage of a slip up.

Final Fixture: Burnley (h)

Wolverhampton Wanderers - Played: 45, Points: 67, Goal Difference: 4

Despite a turbulent season for McCarthy's men, which has seen the gaffer come under considerable pressure from fans, Wolves go into the last game of the season with an outside chance of making the playoffs.  It will not be easy however.  Wolves need to ensure they grab all 3 points at Molineux this afternoon, and must still rely on either Palace or Watford to slip up.

Final Fixture: Plymouth Argyle (h)

Ipswich Town - Played: 45, Points: 66, Goal Difference: 8

Along with Wolves, Ipswich gaffer Jim Magilton must rely on Palace and/or Watford dropping points, along with picking up all three themselves this afternoon to have any chance of making the top 6.  The Suffolk men have been flirting with the play offs all season, but poor away form - winning just 3 all season, has hindered their hopes of success.

Final Fixture: Hull City (h)

Sheffield United - Played: 45, Points: 66, Goal Difference: 6

Amazingly, after a poor start to the season Sheffield Utd still have an outside chance of making the play offs on the last day of the season.  They have the same points tally as the Tractor Boys, but their inferior goal difference means that realistically they will need to rely on slip ups not just from Watford and Palace, but Wolves and Ipswich as well.

Final Fixture: Southampton (a)
