Gibson
The opening day of the season saw Montrose unlucky with a few attempts but didn't have the killer touch. Rovers goal was a scrappy one and something that Jim Weir will of worked hard on in training so it doesn't happen again.
Wednesday night saw a 2-1 away win in the CIS cup with Jay Stein opening his account with a 30 yard lob over the keeper then Keith Gibson nodding in the second. Thanks to this great away win we now have Falkirk travelling up to visit at the end of the month.
Yesterday saw Montrose away to Elgin. With Peat in goals they played four at the back, Thompson at left back with McLeod & Gardiner at centre halfs then Cumming at right back. The midfield shaped up with Stein on the Left Dobbins & stand in skipper Gibson in the middle & Davidson out on the right. Rodgers & Wood up front.
The first half was a scrappy affair with not much happening for either team in horrible rain, although it was the home team who looked mroe dangerous and Peat was called upon to make a couple of fine saves. Stein wasted Montrose's only real chance on the stroke of half time when he blasted high & wide when he had a lot more time to settle and pick his spot.
The second half was just as scrappy until the introduction of Baird for Rodgers. Within 15 seconds of coming on Baird, who was giving up at least 7 inches in height to the home defenders, won a header from a Gibson cross. 15 minutes later Baird made it 2-0 to Montrose, he played Wood out on the wing and his surging run and cross found Baird 12 yards from the goal where he volleyed it in to the bottom right of the net, sending the 15 or so travelling fans in to fits of delight. Gibby was unlucky not to get a 3rd with a thunderous 25 yarder being tipped round the post. All in all not the best performance we are going to see Montrose play this year but 3 points are in the bag.
Which leads us on to looking forward to Tuesday's match against Stirling Albion, if the teams plays to their potential then I can see us progressing especially if Jim Weir starts with Baird & Wood up front.
