ABERYSTWYTH Town manager Brian Coyne has voiced his concern that the FAW’s decision to stage the Welsh Cup Final on a Bank Holiday Monday could result in a poor attendance.
The Park Avenue club hopes a sizeable crowd will travel from Ceredigion to watch the final against Bangor City at Llanelli RFC’s new 15,000 capacity Parc y Scarlets Stadium, on 4 May.
However, the Aber manager says he would have preferred to have seen the big match played on the Sunday, with supporters not having work or school com-mitments the following day.
With early reports being that the kick-off will be at the later time of 4.10pm to suit S4C’s live television coverage (it has since been confirmed 4.10pm is the confirmed kick off time), it could prove to be a very late night for both the players and supporters.
Coyne said: “It’s complete and utter nonsense to stage the final on a Bank Holiday Monday, no thought has been given to the supporters, or the players, and to me the decision is a disgrace."
“The fans are the lifeblood of the game, but those people who make these decisions do not seem to care at all about them, and I am sure that it will affect the attendance at the ground.
“The game should have been on the Sunday, allowing the players and the supporters an extra day to recover, and know-ing that the kids do not have to get up for school the next day.“I have every sympathy with the Bangor City supporters who have got a longer journey, but while I’d have preferred it to be played at a football ground, I’m a lot more annoyed at the date.
“Unlike those who make these decisions, the players and supporters have to get up the next day to go to work, it seems to me that they’re making it as difficult as possible to attend the game.”
