Bees Get Stung By Battling Blues!

Pushing 5000 attending the match yesterday,in blistering sunshine to watch the Spireites get their 1st opening game victory since the 00/01 season! The goals each coming from a different striker,Allison grabbing the 1st,Folan the 2nd and N’Toya, with THAT goal and that celebration to even itself out!

The Spireites dominated for the first 10 minutes of the game, Chesterfield were granted a free kick, which saw Bailey shoot just over the cross bar, so close! Debolla had many chances in the first half, most of which saw him too far out to threaten Nelson in any way. The ref had a shocker, I think I will leave his name out, he’s not worthy to be in this report of such a tremendous game of football! Brentford seemed to be awarded all 50/50 balls, constantly diving when a perfectly allowable tackle was done by the Blues.

Around the 5 minute mark, there was a mix up at the back of the Chesterfield defence, which saw the ball bobble about as Muggleton failed to see with players blocking his view, also the sun didn’t help! It seemed to touch everyone’s foot and Muggleton came out to deal with it, but missed it, the ball looked almost certain to end up in the back of the net but but Muggleton managed to block the shot with his body, the ball ricocheted near the goal line, before he brought it back to safety.

From this moment on Chesterfield took the upper hand although Salako, one of Brentford’s new signings continually bothered the Chesterfield defence of, Nicholson, Blatherwick, Bailey and Evatt but they coped well under pressure especially in the heat of the day!

Mark Hudson then looked to be up on goal himself, he drilled his shot narrowly wide in the direction of the away fans in the Cross Street end. Mark Debolla was in the thick of it all afternoon, making runs up field, trying to play The Chief in, this paid off, around the 10 minute mark, when a cross from the right wing from Debolla, Allison found the ball at his feet and slotted it past the helpless Nelson.

About 5 minutes later, Allison was subbed due to injury and on came Caleb, searching for his 2nd ever league goal for the Spireites. The second half started, just as the Spireites had ended, a header from Caleb just over the bar. The action then started at the other end, as Brentford had a shot, hit with some power, but Muggleton pulled off an amazing fingertip save to deny the visitors.

Then up popped wonder kid Caleb Folan, with a spectacular goal to be proud of, the ball whipped in from the left, Caleb facing the goal in front of him, headed the ball home from the tightest of angles. However, in the celebration, the shirt came off, and a yellow card came out!! The cross coming from Mark Allott. Folan definitely now with the pace of the game was hungry for more and had many chances to get a second or third but was denied by Nelson.

Totally against the run of the play, Brentford began hitting on the break, and in went the goal for them late on in the 2nd half but surely there was no come back for them, or was there? The ball was half cleared by Niven but there was very little Bailey could do as the Brentford player only had Muggleton to beat!

Anyway N’Toya replaced the shattered Mark Debolla who had a brilliant game as did all of them true heroes on the pitch! Mark Innes being replaced by Gareth Davies in the dying moments, who was probably my man of the match yesterday. Possibly his best ever performance for the Spireites!!

Brentford were not finished just yet though, them having a header saved by Muggleton, but nothing unstoppable about it! N’Toya began to get into the game, with a shot just over!

Nothing was going to deter Tcham the man from getting his first ever English league goal though, and up he popped taking on 2 or quite possibly 3 defenders, before releasing a hard hitting shot into the top left hand corner, what a goal!! And what a celebration, a back flip, to finish the days entertainment!!

Brentford were not finished just yet though, them having a header saved by Muggleton, but nothing unstoppable about it! N’Toya began to get into the game, with a shot just over!

My verdict: A brilliant performance from everyone connected even Roy McFarland (by the way, I’m prepared to eat humble pie if it means we will do well!!). I really think this could be our season and after yesterdays performance, if we’re not fighting for promotion this season, then something’s up. We need to be consistent most of all, we don’t have the same problems as last season, as all of our strikers seem to be able to score which is an important asset to have! 3 different strikers scoring yesterday! Mark Innes had a very busy afternoon in midfield and there was the brilliance from Mark Debolla upfront and Steve Blatherwick in defence, who probably didn’t miss a header all game! All in all, a very pleasing effort from everyone who featured yesterday, not a bad performance from anyone!
