Spurs - Reasons to be Cheerful

It is at times frustrating to listen to some Spurs fans regarding our progress (or the perceived lack of it) since Levy employed our very own Dutch Tony Soprano. And, tired of the same arguments I thought I'd suggest a few reasons to be excited for a change.
It is at times frustrating to listen to some Spurs fans regarding our progress (or the perceived lack of it) since Levy employed our very own Dutch Tony Soprano. And, tired of the same arguments I thought I'd suggest a few reasons to be excited for a change.

Here it is. We have finished 5th two seasons running - these represent the two best seasons I have witnessed as a Spurs fan. I am still a tender 22 but cannot remember being as excited about previous performances and the forthcoming campaign as I am now. 2005-2006 was mesmerizing at times - seeing Jol and Wenger literally fight because we matched them until the final game of the season was just jaw droppingly exciting. It was much better than seeing us beat Leicester in the Carling cup or finishing 9th again.

The previous campaign saw Spurs play attractive football at times, but crucially with an end product. Berbatov represents the symbolic end of our club - a creative, attractive footballing force that frustrates occasionally but, ultimately, promises the potential of true quality. Spurs are a club that flatters to deceive. But for the first time in my short Spurs supporting career I feel that the club is on the cusp of achieving something special.

We have a squad that is determined, a board that backs the coaching staff and, crucially, is willing to spend. We have a manager that has won the majority of the fans' hearts and a group of players that respond to his guidance. For the first time in a long while the superiority of the 'elite' of British football, the establishment of the Champions League, is under threat. The economic haven that 4 clubs have benefited from in this country might actually be contestable because of the risks Spurs have taken both financially and the changes it dared make to the very running of the team.

Despite this there are sections of the Spurs community who have questioned the progress we have made. They cite Jol's tactical naivety, Hughton's ineptitude, Comolli's questionable past, Levy's lack of commitment, as a reason to constantly question the system we have in place.

Now, I am in favour of questioning the establishment and challenging power, but when the system so many question is producing real world improvement I wonder about the criticisms aired.

Wenger and Ferguson are two prime examples of having faith in a manager - not every club can throw a budget of £250mill at a prospective head honcho (Mourinho was very lucky indeed)

So yes, Jol has had financial backing and many might say that Spurs are where they should be. I don't disagree with this. But to undermine the progress the club has made with Jol in charge is ludicrous. Yes, the money has been available yet Jol is not the first Spurs manager to spend big, though he is still the first to achieve European qualification through league position in the Premiership (only 2 seasons after we finished 14th and a hairs breadth from the relegation zone) and he has done it consecutively.

Personally, I am of the opinion that a 5th place finish next year wouldn't be the end of the world (though I still think we will be pushing for the 4th spot) and getting rid of Jol, and undermining what Levy has created would be of serious detriment to the club.

I'm fed up of having to defend the club I love, a club that is moving forward. We have genuine reasons to be (quietly at least) cheerful.

Surely Hughton if anything gets wheeled out anytime we're losing and people want to deflect criticism from Jol? It is really pathetic the way that works. Hughton invariably then gets blamed for poor results going back to Ardlies. Yep, he has been there throughout so he has got to be to blame!

Of course when we're going well, no one praises Hughton along with Jol. Assistant manager/head coach (or whatever he is these days), a thankless task!
