Tottenham Hotspur: A seasons review 2006/07

Part 3. October.

Sunday 1st October 2006. Portsmouth (Home).

Remembered mainly for Didier Zokora's outrageous dive which won the penalty that led to Defoe putting Spurs 2-0 up. Spurs had taken the lead through Danny Murphy. Murphy had deftly back heeled the ball into an open net whilst Dimitar Berbatov played tag with David James on the floor. Kanu did get one back before half time to make it slightly uneasy for the home side. Sol Campbell was roundly booed throughout for a change, and consequently did not put a foot right. The poor lamb.

Saturday 14th October 2006. Aston Villa (Away).

Spurs dominated the first half against the unbeaten Villa but could not make any of their chances count. The second half saw Villa come out all guns blazing and win a penalty after 73 minutes. Davenport was sent off, harshly it seemed as he had got something on the ball in the challenge with Agbonlahor, and the resultant penalty was gleeful missed by Angel. For Angel the afternoon took an even worse turn when he turned a Spurs corner into his own net. What made this even funnier was A) The nearest Spurs player was a good fifteen yards away, and B) This was the first time that Spurs had scored direct from a corner since 1927. Sadly the fun was not to last as the self confessed Spurs supporter Gareth Barry cut in from the left and scored with a beauty into the top right hand corner. The git.

Thursday 19th October 2006. Besiktas (Away).

Touted as one of the most difficult games Tottenham's UEFA Cup group most supporters would have taken a draw before the game started. Despite the superb support the Turks enjoyed and the constant noise throughout Tottenham took the lead through Hossam Ghaly. The young Egyptian was put through with a one on one with Runje, the Besiktas ‘keeper, by Berbatov. Ghaly's initial shot was saved by Runje but he could do nothing to prevent the rebound from striking Ghaly's knee and ending up in the net. The game was put to bed by Berbatov himself after 63 minutes when he latched onto a ball by Robbie Keane. The Bulgarian still had a lot to do but he left his marker for dead before rounding Runje in goal and stroking the ball home for 2-0. A Spurs away win. Something we didn't say a lot of this year.

Sunday 22nd October 2006. West Ham United (Home).

The ‘Appy ‘Ammers came to a nicer part of London (probably like a holiday for them really) but they were not so happy once they had seen Mido ripple their net with a sublime turn and shot. Sadly it was the eating habits of former ‘ammer Jemaine Defoe which made the headlines the following day as the diminutive Spurs star chose to take a bit out of the Argentinean midfielder Mascherano. Defoe was later quoted as saying "He tastes like corned beef".

Wednesday 25th October 2006. Milton Keynes Dons (Away).

It was hard to tell who was the more static in Milton Keynes that night; the concrete cows or the MK Don's defence. In their defence they did hold their own and create the occasional scare up until the half hour mark. The winds swirled and the rain lashed down before Mido (twice), Defoe (twice) and then Robbie Keane put the tie to bed. I think the technical phrase used was ‘Sh*t ground, no fans.' But I could be wrong.

Saturday 28th October 2006. Watford (Away).

Standards immeasurably dropped for this one. Spurs came out of the traps quickly enough and created three good chances within the opening 15 minutes. After that it was all down hill. Tommy Smith missed an open goal for the Hornets from 3 yards and Ashley Young's goal was ruled offside when it clearly was not (cheers Lino). Not a match to remember.

Spurs Performance rating: 3/10

Entertainment rating: 2/10.

Ah, sweet memories. November starts off with fireworks and then later turns into a seriously damp squib. Back in a few days.
